November 17, 2016 - Warren County Community Services joins Meals on Wheels America and Subaru in Sharing the Love this Holiday Season

Warren County Community Services is proud to announce that it will be participating in the annual Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners for the ninth year running. From November 17, 2016 to January 3, 2017, Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer's choice of participating charity.

Participating Meals on Wheels America members, like Warren County Community Services will receive a share of the revenue raised by Subaru in their state. Warren County Community Services would like to raise awareness for the popular year-end sales and giving event, and drive support for Meals on Wheels through holding several activities.  “We want to do as much as we can to promote the awareness of Meals on Wheels,” says Amy Houpey, Food Service Director, of Warren County Community Services.  “We have signage in front of our building, we will participate in the Warren County Holiday Parade, there will be Facebook posts and much more.”

“It is a true testament to the value of Meals on Wheels and the strength of our nationwide network that Subaru of America and its customers choose to give back to this vital service year after year,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO, Meals on Wheels America. “Since its inception, Share the Love has helped deliver more than 1.4 million meals to seniors served by Meals on Wheels. It is our hope that this year’s event ensures that even more seniors receive the nourishment they need to continue living independently at home.”

This year, for the first time throughout the life of the program, there will be no cap on the total donation from Subaru of America to its Share the Love charitable partners. By the end of this year's event, Subaru hopes to exceed a grand total of $90 million donated since the creation of Share the Love.

November 15, 2016 - Heating Assistance Available... HEAP Winter Crisis Program is now open.

The Warren County Community Services, Inc., and Ohio Development Services Agency want to remind Ohioans that heating assistance is available to eligible households through the Home Energy Assistance Winter Crisis Program. The program runs from November 1, 2016 until March 31, 2017.

Ohioans facing disconnection from their heating source, those who have been disconnected, or those that have less than 25 percent supply of bulk fuel may qualify. The household must also have a gross income at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, the annual income must be at or below $42,525.

Individuals interested in receiving Winter Crisis assistance must have a face-to-face interview at the local energy assistance provider. For more information or to make an appointment, call 1.866.747.1042.

Customers must bring the following items to their appointment:

  • proof of income (for the last 90 days/3 months)
  • most recent energy bill(s)
  • photo ID
  • all household members must have Social Security cards
  • proof of U.S. citizenship/legal residency for all household members
  • lease/metropolitan housing papers

Documents that are accepted to prove U.S. citizenship/legal residency include: a Social Security Card, birth certificate, U.S. Passport, naturalization paper/certification of citizenship, permanent VISA, or INS ID Card.

November 7, 2016 - Volunteer as an AARP Foundation Tax-Aide in 2017: Tax season is just around the corner and the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program needs tax counselors for sites in Warren County. This program offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most.

We’re looking for compassionate and friendly individuals to join our team of local volunteers for the upcoming tax season. You’ll receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. There is one month of study and preparation then classroom training will be provided during the month of January 2017.

October 27, 2016 - Partnership Helps Ohioans Stay Warm this Winter - HEAP Winter Crisis Program Begins November 1:

The Warren County Community Services, Inc., and Ohio Development Services Agency will help eligible Ohioans stay warm during the cold winter months. September 29, 2016 - WCCS Sponsors Two Free "Medicare Check-up Day" Events:

Medicare's annual open enrollment period is October 15, 2016 thru December 7, 2016.

Warren County Community Services, Inc. (WCCS), will be hosting two free "Medicare Check-Up Days" to help answer questions about your Medicare, Medicare Advantage
Plans and your prescription drug coverage.

The first event is Tuesday, October 25, 2016
from 9am to 3pm.

The second event is Tuesday, November 8, 2016 from 9am to 3pm.

These events will take place at WCCS, 570 N SR 741, Lebanon, OH (across the street from Otterbein). Certified volunteers from the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP), a volunteer organization administered through the Ohio Department of Insurance, will meet with you individually to help you make the best informed decision for your Medicare coverage. OSHIIP is not affiliated with any nsurance program, so the information you receive is non-biased. Keep in mind, OSHIIP does not pick a plan for you... the decision is yours to make.

This is a great opportunity to learn about your Medicare plan options and how to secure the appropriate coverage. The focus of both events is to help beneficiaries, family members and caregivers understand the different Medicare options, assist with plan selection, and determine "Extra Help" eligibility.

The coverage you sign up for during the annual open enrollment period (October 15th thru December 7th) will take effect January 1, 2017.

Medicare participants will be able to select one of these coverage options:

  1. Original Medicare for health coverage paired
    with a Part D prescription drug plan and a supplemental plan;

  2. A Medicare Advantage Plan which provides comprehensive health benefits including drug coverage offered through various private insurance companies;

  3. Existing coverage that already meets your health insurance needs.

Appointments are required for this event. Please call Theresa Gilmore at 513-508-0860 to schedule your appointment for one of the two days offered for your personal "Medicare Check-Up." Space is limited, so please call soon.

**Important** Please bring the following information with you to your Medicare Check- Up appointment:

  • Current Medicare coverage cards and any other insurance cards.
  • Current List of medications, dosages, and how many times a day you take them.
  • Names of your preferred pharmacy.
  • Names of your doctor(s).

If you are unable to attend either of the two events at WCCS, you can call the OSHIIP hotline at 1-800-686-1578, Monday through Friday, 7:30am – 5pm. A certified volunteer will be happy to help you over the phone or provide you with other locations in the area who will be sponsoring Medicare Check-Up Days.

July 29, 2016 - Openings for Fall Head Start Enrollment: WCCS Early Learning Centers are currently accepting applications for fall enrollment in Head Start. A new program option this fall will be a six-hour school day at no cost for income eligible children, in addition to the three and a half hour Head Start classes. There are also openings for full-day, full-year child care. Children with special needs are welcomed, and complete toilet training is not required.

All four Early Learning Centers operated by WCCS have five-star Step Up to Quality ratings. The program is committed to providing the highest quality learning experiences and individual attention in every classroom. Each preschool classroom has three teachers for 17 children, and at least one teacher in each classroom holds a college degree in Early Childhood Education. Centers are located in Franklin, Carlisle, Lebanon and South Lebanon. The program’s kindergarten readiness curriculum offers individualized learning activities with special emphasis on early literacy, science and math skills. Children also learn technology skills and problem-solving and social skills.

Applications are also being accepted for Early Head Start for income eligible children ages birth to three, and pregnant mothers. Program options for infants and toddlers include home-based services and full-year child care for parents who are working or attending school. Home-based families receive a weekly home visit from a specially trained home visitor, plus two play group sessions per month, providing a time for social interaction for both parents and children. Parents receive support and education on infant health, nutrition, child development and parenting skills, as well as referrals to connect them with community resources to meet family needs.

July 1, 2016 - Summer Energy Crisis Program starts - Warren County Community Services HEAP Department will take applications for the Summer Crisis Program (SCP). With temperatures rising; you may be eligible for a one-time assistance with your electric utility bill or to receive an air conditioner, provided you have not received one in the last three years.

Your household may be eligible if it includes a member over the age of 60 or an individual with a documented CHRONIC medical condition. To determine if your household is eligible you must meet one of the above mentioned categories and your household income must be at or below 175% of the 2016 Federal Poverty Guidelines.

  4. Proof of disability (award letter or copy of check/bank statement.

  5. Social Security Card numbers for all household members, regardless of age

  6. Medical form for any households with a chronic medical condition

  7. WCCS requires a picture ID for Primary Applicant.

  8. WCCS requires proof of residency such as a copy of lease

July 1, 2016 - WCCS Receives Farm Market Grant - Warren County Community Services was the recipient of a $500.00 grant to offer nutrition opportunities to senior housing communities.

This grant is funded by the Ohio Business & Professional Women's Retirement Foundation (BPW). The Lebanon Area BPW offered their support and sponsorship to WCCS who helped secure the grant. The grant is to support local Non-profit/low income subsidized Senior housing residents. "We will divide up the grant money so we can help as many Seniors as possible. When we received this grant last year, we used the funds to support a "Market Day" which was a big success. The fresh fruits and vegetables are greatly appreciated by the Seniors, "said Amy Houpey, CDM, CFPP, MBM, who is the Food Service Director for WCCS.

June 21, 2016 - WCCS Receives $1,000.00 for Participation in Meals on Wheels America's 2016 March for Meals - Funding for the 14th Annual Awareness Campaign Made Possible by Subaru's Share the Love Event

Warren County Community Services is proud to announce that it has received a $1,000.00 grant award from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in the 14th Annual March for Meals campaign. This past March was Warren County Community Service's 3rd year participating in the national Meals on Wheels awareness campaign designed to celebrate the proven collaboration of local community organizations, businesses, all levels of government and compassionate individuals to ensure that our seniors are not forgotten.

Food Service Director, Amy Houpey stated, "We had legislators, elected officials and business leaders who volunteer to ride along with our WCCS Meals on Wheels™ driver to assist in the delivery of meals to seniors." Many of our Champions said they would be back to help us again next year. Each individual thanked us for allowing them to participate in this great opportunity. We heard many
encouraging comments, such as: "You do a great job; your operation is impressive; this is such a critical need for our community."

The March For Meals campaign actually started on February 12 with a Father and Daughter duo, Tim and Rachael Tepe. They were not going to be able to participate in March so we were happy to accommodate their schedule. They assisted by riding with our driver and delivering meals to our clients. Our official kick off was held on March 1st, however we decided to have a month long campaign in order to get as much publicity as possible. We had a great response and had a total of 15 Champions participate in March for Meals, throughout the month of March.

We had local business owner Scott Lipps here March 1st,to help with delivering meals. Prior to leaving with the driver, Scott was given tour of the kitchen area, dry storage area and pack out area. He was amazed at the volume of meals we produced in such a small space. Scott stated that he would let the community know how undersized our facility was.

Our CEO, Eugene Rose, spent a great deal of time in our community promoting the March for Meals campaign. Some of the events he attended were: Chambers of Commerce in Springboro, Ohio and Mason, Ohio, The local YMCA Gala, CAP of Dayton, Ohio, Warren County Commissioners' business meeting, WC Recorder's business meeting and Rotary engagements. In addition, our Food Service Director, Amy Houpey, rode with several of the drivers during the month of March to talk to our clients about the campaign.

Nearly $400,000 has been granted to 265 local Meals on Wheels programs and one Meals on Wheels America-affiliated State Association based on their March for Meals efforts. This year's grants were made possible through the generosity of Subaru of America, Inc. and its eighth annual Share the Love Event. During the event held from November 19, 2015 through January 2, 2016, $250 was donated to a customer's choice of a national or hometown charity for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased.

Meals on Wheels America has been a participating national charity since the event's inception in 2008. "The March for Meals grant program is our way of recognizing Meals on Wheels America Members for their efforts to raise awareness and much-needed support for the critical service they provide their communities," said Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander. "Together, we can change the way this country cares for its seniors." The annual March for Meals campaign is an effort led by Meals on Wheels America to present opportunities for volunteers, businesses and governments to support seniors in a variety of ways that make communities stronger, safer and healthier.

January 29, 2016 - WCCS To Open New Restaurant / Banquet Center - Warren County Community Services (WCCS) plans to open a new casual upscale restaurant near Maineville, Ohio in Hamilton Township. The restaurant/banquet center/senior center is scheduled to open in early 2017. WCCS is seeking qualified restaurant operators to propose their plans to run the day-to-day operations of the restaurant/banquet center. “Our qualifications are tough by design” stated Eugene Rose, CEO/Executive Director of the 50-year-old non-profit. “We want someone in here having a proven track record and financial wherewithal.” WCCS has a Request for Proposal (RFP) that is open for public bid now.

According to Rose, the business model is unlike any that have ever been done in Ohio. The approach will meet a community need and it will fund a new Senior Center to be managed by WCCS. “Our senior population is growing daily” said Rose. “WCCS already operates five senior centers in Warren County; growth (particularly in southern Warren County) has spurred additional demand for services that we must meet.” Rose says that keeping the funding consistent with the growth is the challenge.

 “While demand is growing for daytime meals and activities for our seniors, sadly, funding remains static” continued Rose. In fact additional funds are not available to build, furnish and operate the new senior center. “That’s where we had to get creative.”

Regional developer, Bruce Rippe approached WCCS years ago. He and the agency crafted a development plan similar to one that Rippe successfully completed recently in Batesville, Indiana.

Rippe plans a new comprehensive independent senior living development just north of the Hamilton Township Fire Department on Ohio Route 48. The development includes approximately 150 upscale apartments across three buildings. Three-quarters of the apartments will be market rate with the remainder being income subsidized. WCCS will open its new Senior Center in the anchor building.

WCCS will own an upscale restaurant at the site as well as a banquet center. Rose states “our plan is to retain a high-end restaurant operator to run the restaurant and enter into a profit-sharing plan with the operator. Our share of the profits will be used to fund the operating costs of the Senior Center.”

The need is there. A 2015 study indicates that within a 5-mile radius of the new restaurant, there is in excess of $2 million of annual retail restaurant “leakage” going outside the area. Rose hopes to capitalize on this and capture the vast majority of the business currently going elsewhere. “A casual upscale restaurant is definitely needed in the area” states Rose. “It will be well-supported.” Rose also hopes the restaurant will become a destination dining and entertainment establishment drawing from areas such as Lebanon, Springboro, Mason, Loveland and the general Cincinnati-Dayton region.

WCCS is partnering with the Sinclair Community College Culinary Arts School. Students will be provided the real-life work opportunities of working in the restaurant. WCCS will also provide a classroom for the College to use. Students in the program will not be paid by the restaurant operator but will be afforded possible future employment opportunities based upon their performance while training.
